A David Adegbola Film
Vappu 2026
Synopsis
Finland's most joyful day through two sets of eyes.
Director's Note
Vappu — May Day — is unlike any other day in the Finnish calendar.
On this day, something releases. The reserve that characterizes Finnish public life lifts, briefly and completely. Parks fill up. White caps appear on heads that haven't worn them since last year. Sparkling wine is consumed at hours that would be unusual on any other day. The city becomes, for a few hours, openly and unambiguously happy.
This short documentary observes that transformation through two perspectives: a Finnish family for whom Vappu is a deep cultural tradition passed down through generations, and a recently arrived immigrant experiencing their first Vappu.
What the Film Explores
The film doesn't explain Vappu. It follows the day.
What we're interested in is the moment when the newcomer first understands — not intellectually but emotionally — what the day means. That moment of cultural transmission. The point where Finland stops being somewhere you live and starts being somewhere you belong to.
The white cap is the visual anchor. Every Finnish graduate has one. It signals education, identity, belonging. For someone who didn't graduate here, who didn't earn the cap through the same path, it raises a question: can you participate in a tradition that wasn't originally yours? And if so, how?
Format
A 90-second observational reel was released on social media shortly after the event. It reached 400 views in its first 48 hours — modest numbers, but the watch-through rate suggests the material is landing.
A longer cut is in development.
